Border Technologies and Human Rights: Key Insights from Regional Events

Presentation

On November 28, 2024, investigative journalist Uroš Škerl Kramberger presented key insights from the regional training course Human Rights at International Borders: Exploring New Technologies, Their Risks, and Opportunities, hosted by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) in October 2024 in Belgrade, Serbia.

The course focused on the legal aspects of migration and human rights, featuring a contribution from the Greek organization Homo Digitalis on border technologies—tools used by police at borders, their future development, and their impact on human rights. A significant part of the course was dedicated to the work of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) at the Council of Europe, which handles numerous migration-related cases. Additionally, an important session explored methods for documenting injuries caused by border security personnel and other actors.

Zaher Amini shared insights from the Border Violence Monitoring Network (BVMN) conference on border technology, held in November 2024 in Thessaloniki, Greece. His presentation examined key topics such as immigration databases, data collection, and surveillance within the framework of EU migration policy.

The event was part of the EMV-LII Legal Training Programme.
