Navigating Slovenia's New Foreigners Act

On June 26, 2025, an event was held to discuss recent amendments to Slovenia's Foreigners Act. The guests were Iza Thaler, a legal professional working on migration issues, and Samer Arkawi, a PhD student from the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Ljubljana.

A key change relevant to asylum seekers is the new provision allowing them to obtain a single work and residence permit. Under certain conditions, this enables individuals to transition from seeking international protection to becoming migrant workers. This represents a major legislative shift in Slovenia, one that promises to stabilise and improve the lives of many migrants.

However, the administrative procedure for this transfer can be complex and overwhelming. Therefore, informational events like this are essential to guide beneficiaries and support their inclusion in Slovenian society and the labour market.
